Keep On Dreaming!

(many thanks to for the picture above!)

What does it mean to dream?

We can easily check it in our Merriam-Webster app in our smartphones about definition of what a dream is but I would prefer a clever definition from a child. I’ve once heard from a friend that his young nephew defines dreams as:

“what God whispers in our ears while we are sleeping”

It’s a very curious response for me; why does a young child know such a knowledge of God at a young age? Is it really true that God can really whisper dreams to us while we are indeed sleeping?!

I can’t help but think of personalities in the Bible whom God talked to in dreams also that changed the course of history…

joseph the dreamer  Joseph (son of Jacob)

We know his story on how his dreams led him to be sold by his brothers to slavery but being able to dream and interpret them as well also made him rose to ranks in the Egyptian palace and save all the people from famine including his family. I love how he assured his brothers to not worry after their father’s death in thinking that he will revenge on them:

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.” (Genesis 50:20-21)

Angel-Joseph Joseph (husband of Mary and father to Jesus)

Joseph though a carpenter is also a dreamer and all important decisions in his life (many thanks to this site for the scriptural references

a) Her husband Joseph, being an upright man and wanting to spare her disgrace,  decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared  to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary  home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one  who is to save his people from their sins. When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he  took his wife to his home. (Matthew 1:19-24)

b) After they had left, suddenly the angel of the Lord  appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother  with you, and escape into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, because Herod  intends to search for the child and do away with him. So Joseph got up and, taking the child and  his mother with him, left that night for Egypt. (Matthew 2: 13-14)

c) After Herod’s death, suddenly the angel of the Lord  appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his  mother with you and go back to the land of Israel, for those who wanted to kill  the child are dead. So Joseph got up and, taking the child and  his mother with him, went back to the land of Israel. (Matthew 2: 19-21)

It can also be observed that both Joseph though dreamers did not stay in dreamland but acted also on dreams that were given to them by God. Are we also doing the same? Are we also acting on the dreams that are now fulfilled in our lives. It is good to dream dreams but are we also ‘living our dreams’

Can you recall the picture below?

jesus with rich man

And now a man came to him and asked, ‘Master, what good  deed must I do to possess eternal life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one alone who is good. (Matthew 19: 16-17)

This scene wherein Jesus was approached by a rich young man is also in another way asking Jesus if he is indeed living his dream

Why do you think he would ask such a question if he is already living his dream? He still feels there is lacking inside of him.  Could the rich young man be also in one of us? No matter what state of life we are: we are still restless, we always want to achieve something more, we are continually searching…

If we follow what Jesus said to the rich young man (and to the rich young man within ourselves) – to seek one alone who is good. To whom did He refer?…

This may take time for each of us in our own reflections (hope you can share yours also)…

Can it be God himself who is one alone good? Isn’t He the One who cares for our welfare, for our success, for our happiness? This, I got confirmed from daily struggles to pray to Him of what He wants me to do in my life, in my restlessness, in my wanting to achieve something more, in my continuous search…

Have you sought God as well? (like Jesus said…)

I then laughed at myself because if it is God himself who is Good; then truly the child is right! His definition of dreams that it is God who whispers dreams in our ears while we are sleeping then could be true! =)
